Mason Greenwood dedicated his goal against RB Leipzig to former Manchester City player Jeremy Wisten.
The football world was rocked over the weekend as the 18-year-old was found unresponsive at his family home in Wythenshawe on Saturday and could not be saved.
The teenager was an extremely talented footballer and was part of the City academy set-up before being released in May 2019.
Greenwood grew up playing against Wisten in youth football and was moved by the tragic news which emerged over the weekend.
The Manchester United forward netted his first goal in the Champions League during the 5-0 victory over Leipzig on Wednesday night, taking the moment to pay tribute with his muted goal celebration.
Shortly after giving United the lead in the match Greenwood marked the goal by dropping down to his knees and pointing towards the sky.
Taking to social media after the match on Wednesday night Greenwood revealed the message behind his gesture.
“That one was for you bro,” he tweeted followed by a love heart emoji. “RIP Jeremy Wisten.”
A crowdfunding campaign raising money for Wisten’s family has already raised over £11,000.
