Manchester United star Mason Greenwood’s 2020/21 season predicted

To set up this simulation, we used Football Manager 2020 to simulate two full seasons on the game, 2019/20 and 2020/21, to see how Greenwood would perform in the 2020/21 season for United.

We also stopped the club making any major signings, to give Greenwood the best possible chance to play regularly and develop his game in the first team.

This is how Greenwood’s profile looked in the summer before the 2020/21 season in our simulation.

The Football Manager database currently contains data on more than 800,000 individuals and 45,000 active clubs, with data sourced from their international on the ground scouting network which numbers roughly 1,000 people, among their ranks are some who are involved in football in professional capacities, including scouts and coaches.

In addition, each annual iteration of Football Manager has built-in algorithms which check for outliers and data discrepancies. Data accuracy is further ensured by input from contributors who are active within the professional game (players, agents etc.) who provide regular feedback.

This is what happened in our simulation using FM2020.

Mason Greenwood’s 2020/21 season for Manchester United

Despite still being only 18 at the start of the 2020/21 season, Greenwood featured as a first team regular for Manchester United in this campaign under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, making 52 appearances in all competitions, of which 48 of those were starts.

In those 52 appearances, Greenwood scored 20 goals and registered 15 assists, which is an incredible return for such a young player.

13 of those goals came in the Premier League, with the other seven coming in European competition.

To put Greenwood’s goalscoring in perspective, his 20 goals put him as the club’s joint-second top goal scorer in the 2020/21 season, with only Bruno Fernandes scoring more.

And it becomes all the more impressive when you consider that Greenwood mostly played from the right hand side of attack, making 40 appearances on the right wing and only five appearances as a number nine.

The United wonderkid’s performances saw him get a place in the Manchester United statistically best eleven in the 2020/21 season, with Greenwood featuring on the right side of attack, with Fernandes in the number ten role, Rashford on the left and Martial up front.

With Greenwood as a first team regular, Manchester United mounted a title challenge in the 2020/21 season, but came up against three other strong sides in Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea.

United eventually finished in fourth place in the Premier League, but just ten points behind eventual champions Man City.

This Football Manager 2020 simulation predicts that Greenwood will continue his rapid development next season, scoring more goals and assisting more goals for his teammates, becoming a key player for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and one of the club’s deadliest forward players.

The game also predicts that Greenwood may have to make do with featuring from the right, as he does in real-life now, with Anthony Martial still considered the club’s first choice number nine.

Greenwood has a great future ahead of him, with Football Manager 2020 predicting that an impressive 2020/21 campaign is coming for the youngster.
